When you're travelling, a backpack is one of the most suitable bags you can bring along. When shopping for a travel backpack in Singapore, it must be portable, easy to shoulder, and able to store a lot of stuff. Moreover, it’s less prone to theft or loss as it is secured on your back (and sometimes in even front) during travel. However, not all backpacks in Singaporeare equally durable or of top quality. Some travel backpacks might last for just a short span or are just good for daily use, while some are more suited for long adventures.

There are so many kinds and brands of travel backpack in Singapore to choose from, so it can take days to make a decision on which travel backpack to buy. However, we’re here to help by compiling a list of the best backpacks for every situation.

So, how do you choose the right travel backpack in Singapore?

There are a few things you need to consider when buying a travel backpack in Singapore. This is why most people do their research online and go window shopping to see what kinds of travel backpacks are available in store and online.

According to Travelled Paths, many Singaporeans love to travel, hike, trek, go mountaineering and mountain and biking. This is why a travel backpack is usually one of their must haves. Singapore is a shopping capital of the world which means hikers and travelers have a wide selection.

But as a lot of people are too busy to shop in malls, Gearaholic can help Singaporeans find the right travel backpack for them online.

Does the size of the travel backpack matter?

One of the most frequently asked questions about choosing the right travel backpacks is about the size. Most travelers want to know what the perfect size is. No backpack size is better than the other. But, what matters is that the travel backpack is proportional to your body and that it is the right size to hold everything you need for your adventure.

Of course, you don’t want to have a huge bag rising up over your back, yet you also don’t want a traveling backpack that’s obviously too tiny and that will overflow with your stuff. Keep in mind that you need a travel backpack that’s big enough to hold just a bit more than the stuff you’ll be bringing. A backpack that's too big means you’ll have to deal with a lot of extra weight.

What should you look for in a good backpack?

The right backpack for your travels should have a capacity of 40 to 80 liters. The best travel backpacks in Singapore are the ones that last the longest. A good backpack has all the following characteristics that make them well-protected and durable.

  • Water-resistant material
  • Lockable zippers
  • Multiple compartments
  • Internal frame
  • Padded hip belt
  • Padded shoulder straps
  • Contoured/padded back

How much should you spend?

When buying a travel backpack in Singapore, prices depend on the type of fabric, size and brand. Most backpacks cost between US$99-400 (about S$130-525). Medium-sized backpack store brands usually cost around US$199 (about S$261). Generally, store brands are a lot cheaper than the big-name backpacks; however, they are high in quality and quite durable.

Taking care of your travel backpack

After your travel backpack has been thrown around the airport, on the bus and on the ground, it will definitely need to be cleaned. Having spent so much on your backpack, you’d best know how you can take care of it:

1. Remove the straps

First off, remove the straps if the backpack has a removable harness.

2. Give it a scrub

After removing the straps, gently scrub the bag. Use a soft cloth and lukewarm water without adding soap. Clean the interior and exterior of your backpack.

3. Let it dry

Let it dry for a few minutes, so you could see spots that need some extra cleaning.

4. Wash it with soap

After checking the areas that need more cleaning, it's time to add soap to a bucket of water. Instead of soaking the entire bag, just scrub the stained areas with hand soap and wash them with water.

5. Hang it

After washing, open all the zippers and hang the backpack out to dry.

If you’re planning to hike or travel abroad, you can be sure that your backpack will surely have much to endure. Therefore, it would be best to invest in expensive travel backpacks, especially if you’re planning to go on an adventurous trip.
