Is bottled water your go-to option whenever your kids come to you for a drink? Is bottled water what you put into their lunch boxes or their snack trays at movies? If so, you seem to think that water that comes in a plastic bottle is safe for kids to drink. Well, you might have to think again.

Read this post and re-evaluate the safety of your children’s drinking water if it comes in a plastic bottle. We’ll talk about the things you should know about plastic water bottles, and why CamelBak water bottles are the safer and healthier alternative.

Is Bottled Water Safe?

Bottled water, distilled water or mineral water is usually sold in packaged plastic bottles. The water in these bottle may or may not be carbonated. Producing bottled water involves many processes including deionization, distillation, and reverse osmosis procedures.

In Singapore, bottled water is regulated by the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA), which will require the bottled water producer to disclose the water source, show health certificates and so on.

This, however, only verifies the safety of the water itself, but not necessarily of the bottle it comes in. A study conducted on 20 brands of reusable plastic water bottles in Singapore showed that most of them did not leach BPA under normal usage conditions. One polycarbonate bottle, however, was shown to leach BPA beyond the acceptable limit.

What Is BPA, and Why Is It Dangerous?

BPA is short for bisphenol A, a chemical used to make the kind of plastic which is often used for food and water containers. Research shows that it is possible for BPA to seep into food and water and have adverse effects on the health of adults and particularly children, infants and unborn babies.

Not all plastic water bottles are BPA-free, and are therefore not safe for your children to use. It is therefore advisable for you to avoid water bottles with the recycling codes 3 or 7, which indicates that the bottle is made of polycarbonate, the type of plastic known to contain BPA.

Even if your plastic water bottle is BPA-free, newer research shows that replacements for BPA, such as fluorene-9 bisphenol or BHPF, has negative effects on adult health, as well. This makes choosing a safe water bottle for kids even trickier.

Are there Chemicals in Reusable Plastic Water Bottles?

Most plastic water bottles are safe, but just to be sure, you can refer to the recycling symbols that are imprinted on most plastic products that will help you distinguish the kind of plastic used.

One of the most common symbols has three arrows forming a triangle shape around a number between 1 and 7, inclusive. The numbers 1, 2, 4, and 5 are proven to be safe to use for foods and drinks. However, any products with a 3, 6, or 7 should be avoided for use with food and beverages.

Can Your Kid's Water Bottles Be Frozen?

As present, there's still no hard evidence that can prove that freezing water bottles releases chemicals into the drinking water it contains. An expert says freezing can even make the chemicals in the plastic more resistant to leaching. If your kids are going to be outside in the summer sun for a long time, freezing their water bottles can be a safe way to keep them hydrated and help them to cool down.

How Do You Know That CamelBak Bottles Are Safe For Kids?

Not all water bottles are created equal. Even if the bottle you bought has your kid’s favourite cartoon character or sports team logo, or comes in his favourite colour, you can’t be sure that it won’t affect his health in a bad way. As a parent, it’s up to you to be mindful of these issues on top of your kids’ health and hygiene as your kids become preoccupied with school and friends.

CamelBak put safety first when it comes to designing their water bottles for children. This includes putting their water bottles through rigorous third-party testing for BPA, lead, and other harmful materials. CamelBak also tests water bottles independently to make sure that there are no kid-specific hazards related to choking or broken parts.

One concern over using reusable water bottles for children is being able to clean it thoroughly between uses to prevent the growth and spread of germs. The CamelBak is easy to clean with its removable cap, straw and valve that are easily reassembled—all you need is warm, soapy water and a dish rack for drying, and to make sure that the bottle air dries completely.
