Not all plastic water bottles are BPA-free, and are therefore not safe for your children to use. It is therefore advisable for you to avoid water bottles with the recycling codes 3 or 7, which indicates that the bottle is made of polycarbonate, the type of plastic known to contain BPA.
Even if your plastic water bottle is BPA-free, newer research shows that replacements for BPA, such as fluorene-9 bisphenol or BHPF, has negative effects on adult health, as well. This makes choosing a safe water bottle for kids even trickier.
Most plastic water bottles are safe, but just to be sure, you can refer to the recycling symbols that are imprinted on most plastic products that will help you distinguish the kind of plastic used.
One of the most common symbols has three arrows forming a triangle shape around a number between 1 and 7, inclusive. The numbers 1, 2, 4, and 5 are proven to be safe to use for foods and drinks. However, any products with a 3, 6, or 7 should be avoided for use with food and beverages.
As present, there's still no hard evidence that can prove that freezing water bottles releases chemicals into the drinking water it contains. An expert says freezing can even make the chemicals in the plastic more resistant to leaching. If your kids are going to be outside in the summer sun for a long time, freezing their water bottles can be a safe way to keep them hydrated and help them to cool down.
Not all water bottles are created equal.
